The history of Nordic INThe Nordic trade union cooperation dates many years back. Many times it started with Nordic trade unions in a sector or branch cooperating by giving each other financial support during periods of industrial action. Eventually this developed to include information and exchange of experience - and in due time in a more organized cooperation, with common conferences, education etc. In the 90s the Nordic cooperation became more and more a matter of coordinating the Nordic trade unions in order to become more influential in the European and global trade union work. Nordic IN is formedNordic IN was formed as a result of a merger in 2006 between the Nordic federation for trade unions in the metal sector (Nordiska Metall) and the Nordic federation for trade unions in chemical, paper, energy and some other sectors (NIF). This was a development parallel with a similar merger beween the two Swedish trade unions, Svenska Metall and Industrifacket. Important areas of work for Nordic IN is company policy, industrial policy, matters concerning collective bargaining, health and safety, education and training as well as organizational support to the Baltic trade unions. President and general secretaryThe first president of Nordic IN was Kjell Bjørndalen from the Norwegian trade union Fellesforbundet (2006-2007). In June 2007 Stefan Löfven, from the Swedish trade union IF Metall, was elected president. Jyrki Raina is the general secretary of Nordic IN.
