What’s on?

On this page we will shortly inform about some of the things that has been done in order to fulfill the objectives of the Work Programme.

In order to support the efforts to improve the working environment of industrial companies, Nordic IN has produced a simple model for doing a Health and Safety Audit. By doing this the companies can also reduce their costs and improve their efficiency.

The Health and Safety Week of the European Union

The European Union is arranging a Health and Safety Week every year in October (week 43). In 2007 the theme of the Health and Safety Week was musculo-skeletal injuries, caused by work. For the years 2008-2009 the theme is Risk evaluation / risk analysis at the work place.

The network of Health and Safety exchanges information about what is planned in the different Nordic countries for this week, in order to get some good ideas from each other.

The Health and Safety Barometer

The Nordic IN has made questionnaires about the psychological and social working environment in different Nordic groups of companies. The result of these questionnaires are published in a yearly Health and Safety Barometer. So far, a Health and Safety Barometer has been produced for 2005 and 2006, and a third one will be published shortly for 2007. A fourth is planned for 2008.

The European agreement about crystallin silica

An agreement is signed as a part of the Social Dialogue at European branch level. The European Metal Federation (EMF) and the Federation for Mine, Chemical and Energy Workers (EMCEF) are some of the signing parties.

To breath dust from crystallin silica is dangerous. Therefor it ought to be tried if not this substance should be regarded as a cancerogenic substance. But meanwhile - since it does not exist any alternative substances at the moment - there is a great need for regulating how this substance should be handled. And also to improve the knowledge among those working with it.

The agreement contains a right to education for those who are exposed to the substance, regardless of their form of employment. Every year the companies must take measurements and the results of these shall be accounted for every two years. The regulation of the agreement is meant as a minimum standard and shall not affect in any negative way, if there are better regulations in some countries.

The agreement shall now be implemented in every country of the European Union. At the same time the Commission of the European Union continues working with the question whether this substance should be regarded cancerogenic.

This has been done as a cooperation project between Finnish labour market organizations, industrial companies, insurance companies and educational companies.

The Finnish voluntary system of Health and Safety Certficate, has been very successful. More than 200 000 certificates have been issued.
